Rainbow Runway
Color, travel, and landing shapes
Equipment
- Six floor spots in different colors
- Low balance beam or taped line
- Two wedge mats
- Beanbags
- Hoops
Warm-up
- March to each color spot, lifting opposite knee and hand.
- Make tall, tiny, wide, and tucked shapes when the coach calls a color.
- Travel around the room with quiet feet, freezing on a whistle.
Skill progressions
- Step, jump, and stick a two-foot landing from a floor spot.
- Walk forward on the line, then add a quarter-turn dismount to a mat.
- Jump over a beanbag, land with knees soft, and hold for three counts.
Coaching cues
- “Eyes where you are going.”
- “Bend, squeeze, freeze.”
- “Arms by your ears on the runway; arms forward when you land.”
Station activities
- Color jumps: jump spot-to-spot in a called color pattern.
- Beam rainbow: walk the line and step to a hoop at the end.
- Beanbag bridge: carry, place, and retrieve a beanbag without stepping off the mat.
Obstacle-course flow
- Start at the red spot, crawl through two hoops, walk the line, jump the beanbag, and finish with a star landing on the wedge mat.
- Reset by carrying one hoop back to its color marker.
Games
- Rainbow Rescue: collect one beanbag of each called color.
- Traffic lights: green travels, yellow tiptoes, red freezes in a landing shape.
Safety considerations
- Keep one child per beam or line at a time.
- Use low, stable surfaces and place mats flush with edges.
- Separate traveling lanes from waiting children and check that beanbags stay out of mouths.
